The mackerel, colloquially known as "hua fei” or “xian hua fei” in Chinese, is a major product of Nanfang Ao, as well as the most representative product of the Ilan fishing industry. The importance of the mackerel to the Nanfang Ao region is due to the Kuroshio Current nearby, allowing Nanfang Ao to produce 90% of the mackerel in Taiwan. As a result, Nanfang Ao is also known as the Home of the Mackerel.
